Launched in 1991, Wheelbase is an innovative project based in Nottingham working with young people aged 14-19 years old (25 years in cases of additional needs) who are at risk of crime and social exclusion, perhaps due to domestic problems, non-school attendance or similar issues. We offer an alternative curriculum of accredited motor vehicle qualifications and a full foundation learning programme. We also take part in various motor sport activities. We aim to reduce social exclusion and criminality by providing a high quality educational and vocational training experience that promotes employability and allows the individual to realise their true potential. We believe that our approach to curriculum delivery helps to widen the young person’s outlook and stimulate an interest in lifelong learning. Although we were originally funded by the Home Office to address high levels of vehicle crime, our service is not just aimed at young offenders and truants. We provide a person-centred, nurturing environment that has proved to be particularly suitable for young people with behavioural, emotional and learning difficulties, such as ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome and Dyslexia.
Teaching and training takes place in small groups and our staff are well trained and experienced in dealing with this client group. Our staff regularly works towards obtaining updated qualifications to deal with SEN requirements and clients with particular needs, Individual Learning Plans, address information and individual needs raised by referrers. |

English as a second language is dealt with through our network of supportive partnership organisations. We work with many other agencies to ensure the welfare of our clients and enrich their time at Wheelbase.
Wheelbase is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee and is based in Sneinton, near Nottingham City Centre.
In 2009, Wheelbase applied for and was successfully granted independent school status – this reassures referrers of the standard of teaching, qualifications and general provision at Wheelbase.
